IN A STUDY of 52 eczema patients, coconut oil and olive oil both alleviated skin dryness when applied twice daily for four weeks, but coconut oil had a stronger antibacterial effect—clearing 95 percent of skin infections involving the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium, which is believed to exacerbate eczema (versus only 50 percent for olive oil). Coconut oil is also absorbed into the skin more quickly than olive oil, so it feels less sticky and greasy, says lead author Vermén Verallo-Rowell, a researcher at the VMV Skin Research Centre + Clinics in the Philippines. (The coconut scent dissipates in five to ten minutes, she adds.) She recommends using virgin organic coconut oil and testing it on a small patch of skin first.

Merci. This is a timely post for me. I shall try the coconut oil. I had some small success with the Everything Balm from Trilogy which contains coconut oil and also the Billygoat range of body milk which was formulated for the woman's eczema afflicted son.
